Variations about the Mean Videos

unifix blocks

I loved when they demonstrated the raw data of how many people in your family using Unifix blocks.  But then, by showing this data on a graph while looking at the blocks, the information becomes confusing.  It was as easy as grouping the columns of blocks into each “number of family members” category and laying them on top of each other.  Now, the data signified by the blocks matches the data being shown on the graph.  This would be so important to show students!!!!

I also loved that they physically took the Unifix blocks and moved them around to give an even share (average mean) to each family.  Without using any pencil and paper math, the mean was easy to calculate.  Great learning tool for me 🙂
